The Role of Advocates: A Story of Successfully Fighting For Your Music City
Music Cities need don’t just happen. They are nurtured, inspired and defended. Those who care most – who are most impacted – must be willing to stand up and fight for their Music City. Helen Marcou wasn’t willing to let her Music City – Melbourne, Australia – suffer from overzealous enforcement of liquor laws. When the iconic Melbourne venue, The Tote, was threatened with closure, Helen started a movement called Save Live Australia’s Music, or SLAM. Before she was done, 20,000 had marched on the steps of the legislature, laws were amended, and a permanent voice for music was created. Helen continues to be one of Melbourne’s strongest music advocates. In her first public address in North America, Helen shares her story of fighting for her Music City.
