With development of urban places comes competition for space and potential conflict between existing and evolving land uses. Music Cities often struggle to maintain a balance between growth and preservation of music spaces. Some cities have used heritage designation, agent of change, or other planning principles to ensure healthy mixed-use neighbourhoods. Are there creative ways to engage the development community as partners in this process? Must profit be the only motive? Don’t music or cultural spaces bring value to developers and neighbourhoods?
